Chinese Medicine has been an ever-evolving healing tradition for over 2500 years. A basic understanding of its principles and practices vastly increases our ability to maintain and renew health and balance. In depth and intensive, Foundations of Chinese Herbal Medicine is accessible and practical, providing the fundamentals to move on to more advanced studies. Designed for the serious student, classes are conceptual and experiential. Topics include Eight Principle (Yin/Yang) theory, Five Elements, Chinese philosophy, Self-Investigation and Awareness Skills, Four Vital Essences, Food as Medicine, External Pernicious Influences, Organ-Systems, important herbs viewed through the Chinese lens. Also, diagnostic skills (tongue, pulses), and in depth, comprehensive hand-out materials.

This course is a required course for First Level program, “Cultivating the Healer Within.” Counts toward certification for Clearpath School of Herbal Medicine

Class meets for 10 consecutive Wednesdays; March 29, April 5, 12, 19, 26, May 3, 10, 17, 24, 31.

This course explores the foundations of Chinese Herbal Medicine, making it accessible and practical for anyone interested in human health, and providing participants with the foundations necessary to move on to more advanced knowledge in the areas of herbalism and holistic healing.

​Designed for those wanting effective tools and relevant knowledge to provide for personal and family health care, and to pave the way for those working toward becoming community and clinical herbalists.

  • Chinese Philosophy and Psychology 
  • Four Vital Substances, Eight Principles (Yin/Yang Theory) Five Elements, Five​ Spirits
  • Organ Networks, Physiology, Health and Imbalance, External Pernicious Influences
  • Diagnostics, Self Awareness, Sensory Awareness Skills
  • Essential Herbs
  • Nutrition and Food as Medicine

TOPICS ARE DIVIDED INTO FOUR MAIN AREAS:

1. PHILOSOPHY AND PSYCHOLOGY

2. THEORIES AND PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN HEALTH:

Four Vital Substances, Eight Principle (Yin/Yang) theory, Five Elements, Ten Organ Networks.

3. TOOLS AND PRINCIPLES OF CHINESE HERBAL MEDICINE:

Tongue and Pulse Analysis, Constitutional Types, Herbs, Chinese Nutritional Theory.

4. CONCEPTS AND TOOLS FOR SELF-CULTIVATION AND STEWARDSHIP:

​Self-investigation skills drawing upon Chinese philosophy and psychology.
